Battle of Libušín 2026: Where History Becomes a Living Presence
History is not just a sequence of dates in textbooks. It is a constantly pulsating current that connects us with our ancestors, with myths, and with secrets hidden beneath the layers of time. This year’s Battle of Libušín festival will be more than just another gathering of history enthusiasts—it will be a call to understand who we are and where we are going.
What will be the legacy of this year’s battle?
Why are we returning to our shared memory so intensely this year? We are commemorating three fundamental anniversaries that define our story:
The 1991 Legacy: It has been over a thirty-year journey since the founding of this festival, during which a daring experiment evolved into the world’s largest living chronicle of the Middle Ages. This year, we celebrate the "Christly" 33rd year of the battle, and the program will once again be unique!
Cultural Continuity: We celebrate the deep roots of the Czech state, which in Libušín stretch back to the 10th century, when the Přemyslid hillfort under the protection of St. George laid the foundations of our statehood.
The Turning Point of Ages: This year, we recall the transformation from the end of Roman influence over our lands and Europe, through the formation of the Czech state in the Middle Ages, to the time when the medieval order gave way to the ideas of humanism—a journey from "darkness" to reason that culminated in the Hussite movement and paved the way for modern society.
Commemorating the three "26s" that shaped Czech nation
"This year's Battle of Libušín is not just a historical meeting; it is a resonance of three pivotal moments that define the course of Czech history. We commemorate one thousand years since the Battle of Moravia (1026), nine centuries since the famous victory at the Battle of Chlumec (1126), and six centuries since the epochal clash at the Battle of Ústí (1426). These three milestones—representing the Early, High, and Late Middle Ages—are not just points in time; they form the backbone of our statehood's evolution. From the early struggles to consolidate power, through the defense of sovereignty in the High Middle Ages, to the Hussite Revolution, which shattered the old world with its tactics and opened the gates to humanism, defining our modern state."
History Behind the Scenes: From Romans to Modern Birth
Our battlefield this year won't just be a place for medieval knights to clash. We are going deeper—to the very foundations laid before the Czech state was even formed. We are proud to announce that the Libušín field will be visited by the Legio X under the command of Ladislav "Wothan" Tomič and friends of the Curia Vítkov project. The presence of these legionnaires serves as a reminder of the era when the Roman Empire encountered the tribes in our lands. We will also reflect on Rome's influence on the arrival of Christianity, which shaped the spiritual order of our medieval state.
This visit of ancient power is no coincidence. It closes a grand circle of our story: from the time before the formation of the state, through the era of castles and crafts, to the Hussite victory at Ústí, which showed how a new era is born through revolutionary changes in thought and tactics.
