Ancient Rome in the Heart of Libušín: Legio X to Bring the Discipline of Emperor Marcus Aurelius

The Libušín 2026 Festival will start 18. April and will offer more than just medieval combat this year. In this edition, we are returning to the very roots of our statehood. The festival will host one of the most prestigious European reenactment projects – the Roman Legion X Gemina Pia Fidelis, under the leadership of Ladislav Wothan Tomič.
Where Antiquity Ends, Our Story Begins
Why invite Roman legionaries to a medieval festival? The answer lies deep in our history. The end of the 2nd century AD, during the Marcomannic Wars under the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, was a time when Roman sandals trod the dust of our lands. The departure of the Tenth Legion and the subsequent decline of the ancient world cleared the way for the turbulent developments that eventually led to the formation of the Christian Czech state.
Visitors will have a unique opportunity for direct comparison: how did the precise military art of antiquity contrast with the knightly honor and brutality of the Middle Ages?
What to Expect in the Antique Camp?
The legionaries aren’t just bringing their swords to Libušín; they are bringing a whole piece of history. In their encampment, you can catch a glimpse of the life of a professional soldier of the ancient world:
Life in the Camp: Explore authentic tents of soldiers and officers, see a military shrine, and experience the atmosphere of the watch. Despite the absence of their usual chef, we will attempt to uncover the secrets of ancient field cuisine.
Artillery of the Ancient World: See formidable siege engines in action, such as the Scorpion or the Cheiroballistra, which were unrivaled in their time.
Ancient Cavalry: Discover the unique equipment of the riders, their specific treeless saddles, and the harnesses that defined the reconnaissance and rapid strikes of the era.
Discipline in Dust and Sand: The Great Arena
The highlight of the program will be a dynamic demonstration of Roman infantry drill. To the sound of Latin commands, you will witness:
Formations and Tactics: The legendary "Testudo" (tortoise), the rotation of ranks during active combat, and the perfect discipline of the march.
Arms and Armor: A detailed description of different types of soldiers – from the common legionary to the high-ranking officers.
Cavalry vs. Infantry: A demonstration of how ancient horses were trained for combat against infantry and how the infantry defended themselves against a cavalry charge.
"We want to show our visitors that the foundations of our state were laid at a time when Roman camps stood on our territory. The presence of Legio X serves as a bridge between ancient civilization and our medieval heritage," say the organizers.
